Unintentional Injuries

Public Health experts now avoid the term accident in referring to unintentional injuries because it implies that injury is a change of occurrence or unpreventable mishap over which individuals have no control. Experts emphasize that injuries are preventable if people adopt behaviors that promote safety and if society does its part in reducing environmental hazards. Please provide examples of safety-promoting behaviors that college students might adopt. How would you promote these behaviors?

  1. A couple of safety behaviors might include but are not limited to: watching how much you drink, and that comes with being educated with alcohol and how much is too much; being cautious when you are alone at night; drink plenty of water or alternative solution to stay hydrated; make sure you get enough sleep... don't stay up late EVERY NIGHT! There are a lot of programs already on campus that teach some of these precautions, as well as lots of health help at the Sheetz Center promoting college student's safety.

  2. Falling and hurting yourself during a drunk night could be included an example of an 'accidental' injury that would occur among college students. This could be prevented by practicing good behaviors and eliminating bad ones. Binge drinking is an epidemic in US colleges and if avoided, many injuries could be avoided. As a real life example, my best friend in high school broke her foot at a party we were at and the injury has been causing ongoing problems since and more are predicted to come. This could have been easily avoided if we would have made smarter decisions that night. By not binge drinking, our minds would have been in a better state for decision making and she wouldn't have thought that her decision was a good idea and wouldn't have gotten injured.

  3. Injuries are preventable if people adopt certain behaviors that promote safety. A few examples of safety-promoting behaviors that college students might adopt include always having a DD if they choose to consume alcohol, everyone should practice not leaving their drinks unattended, and simply being aware of your surroundings. These simple safety-promoting behaviors have the potential to prevent someone from an preventable injury.I would promote these behaviors by putting up informative posters around campus and also by word of mouth.

  4. Accidental Injuries usually occur when someone isn't in there right state of mind. Things such as binge drinking are certain unhealthy behaviors that need to be deflected with helpful & healthy behaviors. If they decide to drink they shouldn't drink to the point where they cannot function properly. They should also stay with a designated group of friends that they know will look at for them .These can be promoted by education on drinking and creating a buddy system.

  5. Some behaviors I would say is not walking home alone when your drunk. Kids now a days think its okay to wonder off alone when they are under the influence and these accidentally injuries tend to occur. Its a big problem because you hear about how someone falls and get really hurt, maybe hit there head and suffer a concussion. Even some people think its okay to drunk drive and thats one of the worst things you can do because you're putting your life and whoever else is driving with you in danger. Having that DD or one person who is gonna take care of you says a lot of trouble and can help not let these Accidentally injuries occur.

  6. There are a descent amount of safety-promoting behaviors that college students should adopt. In terms of drinking, you should never be alone. You should always have a buddy with you throughout the night. Furthermore, never walk home alone from a party or get into a car with someone who has been drinking. There are way to many drunk driving accidents that happen so it is not worth getting in the car. The bottom line is that you need to be comfortable with your surroundings and know the environment you are in. Our health and safety is extremely important, so adopting to these tips will greatly help in the long run. Lastly, I would promote these behaviors by trying to spread the information as best I can. I would try to tell my friends as often as I can and have them tell other people as well.

  7. College students can avoid injury by watching the amount they drink. There are countless injuries that occur while being drunk, whether thats falling and scraping your knee or worse, getting in a car and risking a life. This could be avoided by knowing your limits and being educated on alcohol. Students should also get plenty of sleep and eat healthy to avoid gaining weight and having a healthy immune system. One last thing is always staying with a group of friends to avoid any dangerous things that could happen when alone.

  8. I agree on experts idea that accidents can be prevented when people adopt good behaviors. for example drinking responsibly is a big thing. i see a lot of my friends drink to get wasted and black out. not knowing what shameful or outrageous thing they have done on that night. not taking responsibility of themselves and making their friends into awkward position such as taking care of them, and watching them not to get sexually harassed (one of my friend actually started taking her clothes off after alcohol usage) will lead to accidents and even toxic friendship.

  9. College students can avoid many injuries by avoiding the use of drugs or alcohol. When being under the influence you are more likely to make stupid choices which result in an injury. To prevent this, students can watch what they drink, not use drugs and stay with a group of friends instead of wondering off alone. To promote these behaviors, the campus should hang up informational posters and hand out papers with facts about drugs and alcohol with the effects that is has on your body.

  11. Moderation is key. The probability of unintentional injuries, whether happening under the influence or not, can be limited by doing things in moderation. If you decide to drink, know your limits. Drinking, eating, and exercising in moderation can allow you to fully experience college while staying healthy. There are different clubs, organizations and classes Penn State has to offer to promote and educate students on healthy behaviors. I could further promote these beneficial behaviors by being mindful of my own actions so that I can set an example for my fellow students.

  12. Everyone seems to be discussing safety behaviors towards alcohol consumption. I think that the University does do a very good job in informing the student body about alcohol use and consequences. I mean there are surveys, posters, informational events, support programs, and seminars that freshman must participate in to inform them about the use of alcohol. I'm not too sure that there is much more the University can do, I'm pretty happy with what they have going on already. At this point I think that the injuries that take place are going to happen regardless due to students making their own mistakes anyway, and there isn't much that the University can do about that.

  13. I know for me personally reducing my participation in risky athletic activities would keep me free of unintentional injuries. For instance, staying off the dirtbike/snowboard would keep my safe and sound throughout my college semesters. The problem is that I love both of those extreme sports so much that they have become a sort of addiction. I don't think I could refrain from participating in said activities.

  14. Due to social medias influence on today's college students, many students perform idiotic actions that may result in an accident or injury while intoxicated in order to receive views and "likes" on social media. Although the school does a good job by educating students about the negative influences of alcohol, we still see many injuries occur annually while students are intoxicated. In order to prevent these accidents, its in the students hands to either not drink to the point of intoxication or to have a friend(s) watch them and make sure they don't due anything that could result in them injuring themselves or others around them for social medial purposes.

  15. Some safety behaviors that I think are important for college student to adopt can be simple things that many students might not think of. Things such as taking vitamins can be a safe behavior to help students to stay healthier especially living in the resident halls or apartments with others. Also knowing what you are drinking if you choose to go to a party. At no point should it seem okay to a person to drink "jungle juice" made up of God knows what. It is important that students know what they are drinking and especially how much they are putting into their bodies in a certain time frame. Also if a student decides to experiment with drugs they should do the research first and start off slow. A lot of college students try smoking pot for the first time in their first year in college, but if they understand the affects it can have on the body, they might be more aware of their behaviors. Being more aware of all behaviors will set you up for safer activities.

  16. A few safety promoting behaviors that college students could possibly adopt in order to prevent harm could be things like simply watching how much you drink if you do, or even watching someone else drink for them if they tend to have a bit too much. Sticking with a person is never a bad idea if they've become intoxicated. Having a designated driver or "chaperone" of the group is always a good idea also to make sure no one mysteriously disappears.

  17. Some safety promoting behaviors that college student could possibly adopt in order to prevent harm to themselves or other people. It is simple things that many students might not think of. Things such as, watching how much, or what a person drinks. While under the influence of alcohol always stay with a group of friends and never ever wonder off alone. A big thing is also, never ever get in a car with a person who has been drinking alcohol. There are way to many drunk driving accidents that happen every year from being under the influence. Always have a designated driver who has not been drinking, or call a taxi. Always be aware of your surroundings and who you are with. To promote these behaviors, the campus should have classes that students should have to take, hang up a lot of informational posters and hand out papers with facts about drugs and alcohol with the effects that is has on a persons body. This might make people to take consideration in preventing Injuries if people adopt certain behaviors that promote safety.

  18. There are many safety behaviors about unintentional injuries. For college student, drinking issue is a big issue for now. Most of college student have party over weekend, they should to know how much they drink, and if they feel drank, they should to stop drink and start to drink some water to reduce alcohol in their body. What is more important, if they have a alcohol, do not let them drive the car, it will cause serious issues.

  19. A Behavior college students may adopted to combat unintentional injuries would be a 5 count before deciding on actions they may partake in, to take 5 seconds and think about the consequence's before making a stupid decision and you could promote this ideal through stressing students think about their actions in depth before they take them whether it be drinking, or a dare to run on ice.

  20. Simple safety behaviors for college students can not only prevent unintentional injuries but also save a life. Such things as thinking before you make a decision. This seems to be something that many college students struggle with and find themselves regretting that very decision later. Another example of a simple task is to limit themselves with their actions in general such as drinking. While we all know that many college students drink to get drunk, a moderation of any toxic substance is a simple decision that anyone can make.

  21. self promoting behaviors that more college students should adopt are going to sleep earlier, drinking more water and taking alcohol and caffeine out of the picture as much as possible. the healthy habits could prevent such conditions as depression which is increased due to lack of sleep and which could cause further conditions such as eating disorders due to lack of an appetite.

  22. Some self promoting behaviors that would be beneficial to college students are getting more sleep, eating less junk food, getting more exercise, and drinking less. These behaviors all can be avoided and can ensure that a college student had a healthier life style. When college students drink or get too tired it increases their risk of having injuries that are preventable, such as getting in a car accident or falling off of a balcony.

  23. One of the main problems in college is stress and how it can escalate and lead to so many others things. Car accidents because of lack of sleep, etc. I think creating a more conscience environment and for example, providing stress relief events, talks or ideas can lead to a healthier perspective and life. It could even lead to more positive outcomes and a more knowledgeable and self-aware student body. Knowledge is key and if you are aware of side effects and such then you can take the necessary precautions to prevent them from happening. Some people take multiple amounts of medications because of stress related symptoms which puts them at a risk for accidents and such but had they maybe been aware or advised otherwise, accidents would not happen.

  24. I feel like no one intends to get injured. It never is really planned, wanted, or intentional. An accidental injury comes with something that happened that wasn't expected. Being in a car accident and getting injured is an accidental injury because no one wants to get hurt or hurt others (when speaking accident wise). Getting injured when drunk is also an accidental injury because you aren't in the right state of mind and something that wasn't intentional caused you to hurt yourself. Obviously previous actions can trigger getting hurt like drinking, doing drugs, doing risky things, drinking and driving, etc. but no one really ever has the intention of hurting themselves.

  25. There are many ways injuries can be prevented with college students. Paying attention to how much you drink is huge. Drinking is OK but don't drink until your drunk. Most college students don't get enough sleep too. Both of these things lowers awareness and decision making skills, which leads to accidents from tripping to car crashes.

  26. I think that college students are at a high risk for getting in accidents because of distracted driving. Most college students are at an age where they are attached to their cell phones. I think it would be a positive step to send out a university email discouraging texting while driving.

    ReplyDelete
  27. High risk behaviors can be avoided if you had a friend looking out for you while you drank to make sure you didn't do anything to dangerous. Or limiting the amount you drink. Also getting the right amount of sleep is crucial.
